finstory in Claude

Connect finstory to Claude, add the finstory plugin, and work on your own close in a conversation. Ask about the numbers, build reports and draft board stories. Here is what Claude can and can't do, who can do what, and what to do when something doesn't work.

Updated 14 October 2026

What it does

finstory in Claude lets you work with your finstory workspace from a conversation with Claude. It does three jobs:

  • Questions about the numbers. Ask how the month went, what drove a variance or which cost lines are over budget. Claude takes the figures from your finstory workspace.
  • Reports. Claude creates and edits reports in your workspace, and publishes them when you are happy with them.
  • Board stories. Claude drafts a story page by page, with headlines and commentary, and updates last month’s story for the new month.

Claude reads and writes: it can create and edit reports and stories. It does not load or delete financial data, it never moves money, and it never deletes a report or a story. When you ask Claude to get rid of a report, it moves the report to the “To Be Deleted” group, and a person deletes it in the finstory app.

Before you start

You need:

  • a finstory subscription;
  • a finstory login (Google, Microsoft or email) that has been invited to your company’s workspace;
  • your data in finstory: we load it with you during onboarding, from NetSuite or Excel;
  • a Claude plan that supports connectors: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner allows the connector first.

What Claude can see and change follows your finstory role: Claude can do what you can do in finstory, and nothing more. See Roles.

Connect finstory

Connect to Claude

The button opens Claude with the connector filled in. To add it by hand:

  1. In Claude, open Customize > Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
  2. Name it finstory and enter the address https://mcp.finstory.ai/mcp-finstory.
  3. Add it, choose Connect and sign in (see Sign in and approve).

On Team and Enterprise, an Owner first adds finstory in Claude’s organization settings. Then each person connects with their own finstory login.

Add the finstory plugin

We recommend it. The plugin adds finstory’s skills to Claude: instructions for the three jobs, so Claude knows how to answer a question about your numbers, build a report and draft a board story with finstory.

The plugin brings the finstory connector with it, at the same address: https://mcp.finstory.ai/mcp-finstory. If you have both the connector and the plugin, you see one set of finstory tools in Claude.

  • In claude.ai or the Claude desktop app: open Customize > Plugins, choose Add, then Add marketplace, and enter finstory-ai/finstory-claude-plugin. Then add the finstory plugin from it.
  • On Team and Enterprise, an Owner can add it for everyone under Organization settings > Plugins.
  • In Claude Code: run claude plugin marketplace add finstory-ai/finstory-claude-plugin, then claude plugin install finstory@finstory.

Then connect finstory, so the skills can reach your workspace:

  • In claude.ai or the Claude desktop app: open the plugin’s Connectors tab, connect finstory and sign in (see Sign in and approve). The tab shows whether finstory is connected.
  • In Claude Code: run /mcp, choose finstory and sign in with your finstory login.

In claude.ai, skills need Code execution and file creation switched on in Claude’s settings.

Sign in and approve

When you connect, Claude opens app.finstory.ai.

  1. Sign in as you usually do, with Google, Microsoft or email.
  2. Pick the workspace Claude should use, and approve.
  3. You are back in Claude, connected.

Access renews on its own while you use it. If you don’t use finstory in Claude for 30 days, Claude asks you to connect again. You can disconnect at any time in Claude’s connector settings.

Try these prompts

  • “How did the last closed month go against budget? Give me the three biggest variances in operating income and what drove each one.”
  • “Which cost lines are over budget year to date, and by how much?”
  • “Build a report with revenue, gross margin and EBITDA by month for this year, actual against budget. Show me a preview before you publish it.”
  • “Draft the board story for the last closed month: a P&L page, a revenue page and a cash page, each with a headline and two lines of commentary. Ask me when the data can’t explain a movement.”
  • “Open last month’s board story, move it to the latest closed month and update the headlines where the story changed.”

What Claude can do

Area Claude can read Claude can change
Company 3 actions: your company context, finding accounts and entities, browsing a hierarchy Nothing
Analysis 1 action: the figures you ask for, by account, entity, period and scenario Nothing
Reports 6 actions: your reports, their outline, a preview of their figures and layout, and the building blocks a report can use 11 actions: create a report, build its rows and columns, add, edit and remove charts and tables, set what it shows (such as the period), publish it, and move it to a group
Stories 4 actions: your stories, their pages and what is on each page 7 actions: create a story, add pages and commentary, edit and reorder pages, and remove pages or status chips

Depending on your Claude settings, Claude asks for your approval before it uses an action that changes or removes something.

Roles

Claude acts as you, with your finstory role, in the workspace you approved. finstory checks every request against that role.

To do this through Claude You need this role in finstory
Ask about the numbers and read reports Any role
Read stories Any role. Readers see stories shared with the company; editors also see their own private stories; power users and admins see all stories.
Create a story, and edit your own private stories Editor, power user or admin
Edit stories shared with the company Power user or admin
Create a report as a private draft, and edit your own drafts Editor, power user or admin
Publish or move reports, and edit published reports or other people’s reports Power user or admin

Stories that Claude creates are private to you. To share one with your company or the board, use finstory. A report that Claude creates stays an unpublished draft until a power user or admin publishes it.

Your data

  • finstory receives only what Claude sends to carry out your request: the action and its inputs, such as the report to open or the text for a page. It never receives your chat history, your files or Claude’s memory.
  • What finstory sends back goes into your Claude conversation. Anthropic handles it under your Claude plan: see Anthropic’s privacy policy.
  • The details are in our privacy policy.

Troubleshooting

  • Claude says you have no access to the workspace. Your finstory login has not been invited to that workspace. Ask your finstory admin to invite you.
  • You can’t find the connector (Team or Enterprise). An Owner has to allow finstory in Claude’s organization settings first.
  • Claude asks you to connect again. This happens after 30 days without use. Connect and sign in again.
  • The numbers are for the wrong period. Ask Claude which period it used. When you don’t name one, finstory uses your workspace’s default period. Name the month in your question to be sure.
  • Claude says your finstory connector address is being retired. You are using one of the old connectors. Replace it with the new one (see For admins and power users).
  • finstory is unavailable. Try again in a few minutes. If it keeps happening, email support@finstory.ai.

For admins and power users

  • Loading and deleting data. The Data Admin connector loads and deletes financial data, restates accounts and builds models from source systems. It is separate from finstory in Claude. Install the finstory data admin plugin, or add it as a custom connector at https://mcp.finstory.ai/mcp-data-admin. You need a finstory role that may load data.
  • Old connector addresses. Connectors added before 28 September 2026 at the old addresses (story builder, report builder and data analysis) keep working until 31 March 2027. Replace them with one connector at https://mcp.finstory.ai/mcp-finstory, then remove the old ones.
